Our Story
What started as conversations between two friends evolved into Cornbread & Masala—a comedy and entertainment project built around cultural contrasts, shared experiences, and genuine friendship.
Cornbread represents Appalachian and rural Kentucky culture. Masala brings the perspective of an Indian-American raised in the Midwest and Kentucky. Together, they explore everything from food and family to music, comedy, culture, and everyday life.
Their differences create the setup. Their friendship delivers the punchline.
Whether through podcasts, comedy sketches, food events, community projects, or future television concepts, Cornbread & Masala aims to prove that people from completely different backgrounds can find common ground, create something unique, and have a lot of fun along the way.
Cornbread
Tommy Corman, better known as "Cornbread," is a Lexington, Kentucky native with a long history in entertainment. He achieved significant regional success as a musician with the band Triaxle and has since brought his musical expertise, country roots, and unique sense of humor into the world of comedy and podcasting.
Known for his "You Know You're a Redneck" style observations, Tommy enjoys creating conversations, debates, sarcasm, and the occasional bit of harmless mischief alongside his comedy partner, Venkat "Masala." Entertaining audiences has been a part of Tommy's life from an early age.
Outside of entertainment, Tommy works as a painter, landscaper, and lawn-care professional. He is married to his wife, Cody, affectionately known as Chava. When he's not working or performing, Tommy enjoys working on cars, writing comedy scripts, and spending time with his guitars, drums, and music.
Masala
Venkat, or "Masala," initially wasn't sure about adopting the nickname. He wondered if a food-related name fit his personality and worried people might see it as gimmicky. Eventually, he embraced it, saying, "If it works, let it work. Why stop something that's working?"
Of Indian descent, Venkat spent much of his childhood and college years in Illinois. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Human Development and Family Studies and later received a Master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Kentucky College of Education. He is both a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) and a Certified Vocational Evaluator (CVE).
Throughout his career, Venkat has worked as an educational support specialist, respite provider, community living supports professional, and entrepreneur, helping individuals and small businesses grow through his training and experience.
A lifelong entertainer and creative thinker, Venkat is passionate about cultural fusion. In recent years, he and his friend Tim developed the concept of blending Appalachian traditions with recipes inspired by Indian heritage. This idea evolved into Appasala, a community food ministry dedicated to bringing people together through food.
Venkat often says that cultural differences can create opportunities for connection, understanding, and comedy. Recognizing the potential for humor in their vastly different backgrounds, he approached Tommy with an idea: create something that combines Appalachian culture, Indian culture, comedy, storytelling, and real conversations.
